For the small group leader:

Thank you for doing what you’re doing! Now more than ever, small groups are an important connection point to Christian community. Your work is important. I’ve been a small group leader and trainer for over 7 years. Here are the things I struggle with the most:

• Choosing studies with staying power - there’s nothing worse than starting a 6-week study only to find there’s only enough depth for a couple sessions.

• Finding questions that spur conversation vs. crickets - we’ve all encountered questions that sound great, but are really hard to answer without considerable prep time.

• Filling time between studies - I often need one-off studies to fill gaps between longer studies. This need typically arises around summer or Christmas breaks or when I know my attendance will be light.

• Facilitating exercises that build intimacy and create unity - my ultimate goal as a group leader is to encourage spiritual growth in each individual. Part of that growth comes from feeling comfortable within the group community. Periodic exercises help.
